SEPTEMBER

SEPTEMBER

I have been working a lot in oils recently. A departure from what I normally do. I mean, I am an American!!!  I like immediate gratification - which acrylics afford me. But I am relearning oil paint techniques. And, to tell the truth, there is a depth of color that oils have. Not only in impasto - where the paint is laid on really thick (which I like - a lot, a lot, a lot!) but in the value or well... it's hard to explain. But the colors look "more so", if that makes sense. Reder reds, greener greens. I like it. Have I said that before? At any rate the drawback is that oils take just forever to dry. And I am working on a bunch of canvases at once but here are some new works that are finished. Only one completed so far in oils.

Ok, Ok, Ok! I am pretty sure Laurie was there that day when I was taking pictures at work. In the bathroom in Fitkin basement. Yes. The bathroom. The floor had just been washed and I really liked the pattern the drying water made. And I changed the color of the bathroom tile from boring grey to this green and blue palette. It is textured and way cool.

OK (Ok, Ok). Even I will admit that this one is "different". I have always liked the so called "primitive" art. Art from civilizations long gone. Egyptian, Mayan, cave paintings. You get the idea. At any rate, this design was preying on my mind. A highly patterned field - like the beards and hair of the Assyrian princes depicted in bas relief. So, having an extensive background in sheet rock - witness all the sheet rock and taping I have done on "this old house" - the idea of joint compound came to me. I just had to experiment with it. The base is a canvas with joint compound over it and all the little dots are piped on with joint compound. Very fragile (or "fra-geee-lay" as Tony says). And I painted it a screaming metallic silver, painted some of the dots and put a high gloss over the whole thing. Cool, huh?!!

Acrylic on Paper

Ahh, more like the stuff I usually do - acrylic on paper. Probably my first love. This actually evolved from a doodle I did at work - while on hold waiting for the MSK doctors to check out a case I was doing. I really like the slightly "off" primary colors and the Asian feel to it.

EARLY SUMMER. New Paintings (And a "bonus" pic of me!)

I have been exploring a few new avenues. Besides the interactive piece I have also been working with oils. And there were a few images that I just had to "get out" and do a painting of them. Here are the latest works. I hope you enjoy them!

Landscape
Oil on Canvas
36" x 36"

This canvas had been hanging around forever - up in the office. I had done a background and placed what was supposed to be the death crone in the foreground. What a miserable failure that was! So it sat there till one night I had an epiphany. I decided to do a rather thick layer of paint and "comb" it so that it gives the effect of grasses. I think it really works. Check out the detail of the piece below.

Red
Oil on Canvas
24" x 24"

Gee, I liked "Landscape" so much that I wanted to do a couple more pieces in the same fashion. I did "Red" and also "Blue".

"The Artist in Her Studio"

OK, I work in the kitchen. I am working on "Red" in this photo.

Blue
Oil on Canvas
24" x 24"

Mailed
Acrylic on Paper
12" x 12"

Mailed II
Acrylic On Paper
12" x 12"

Really, dead Barbies are after me! I saw this "Barbie" (a bootlegged Barbie, by the way) in front of the drive up mail box in Waterbury. I couldn't believe it. And I ran her over! Twice!! Oops. So, it was just too much. I decided to do two companion pieces to the original - "New Haven After Dark".

Seymour, Ct.
Acrylic on Canvas
18" x 24"

I take a back road to work (Thanks, Bill, for that tip!) and in late spring there is a curve where the forest presses in upon you. But, thru the trees there is this wonderful gash of bright light. I just had to record it.

Novella - Interactive Art

Novella - Interactive Art

The concept of interactive art really interests me. I think this piece might be a stepping stone for further works. Because people like playing with things as well as looking at them I think you will like the concept. Novella had many incarnations before it came to fruition. The whole thing was worked and reworked over a couple of months. Pat worked on the mechanics of the piece while I did the canvas and scroll work on the front of the sliders. It works by simply moving the sliders back and forth. With each move you create another "story".

I have four new pieces that I would love to share with you. Let me know what your think about them. I have noticed, over the last year, that my "style" is evolving. I also feel that I have become a better technician during the last year. Agree or disagree! Love them or hate them! Drop me a line.

New Haven After Dark
acrylic on paper
14" x 14"

One evening, a few months ago, while going home I noticed 2 dismembered Barbie legs on the sidewalk - under a tree. No other bits of Barbie - just the legs. I couldn't resist. I whipped out the cell phone and took a picture. I just knew I had to paint it. So indicative of New Haven "after dark"!

Nyads and Dryads
acrylic on paper
18" x 24"

I've always had a facination for Greek mythology. Back in the day Edith Hamilton was required reading. During a recent "book cull" I found that I had four - count them - four volumes of Edith Hamilton's Greek mythology! At any rate, I started thinking about Dryads - I really like trees, too. This painting evolved over a period of time - I thought it should be treated "classically" with an almost art deco feel.

Forest
acrylic on paper
18" x 24"

While sitting in the doctors office I was perusing one of those glossy travel magazines. This is actually a compilation of several photos. I particularly like the dark, dramatic almost mysterious roots while the trees grow towards the light of the sky.

Sumacs, Early Autumn, Newport
acrylic on paper
18" x 24"

While in Newport, RI this past autumn we "did the cliff walk". No matter how many times I have walked it, there is still something new and beautiful. Frankly, I found this stand of sumacs much more beautiful than the mansions behind them - they were starkly limned against the sky.

Early Morning Dew, Holly's House, Maine
Acrylic on Paper
12" x 16"

Every year "the girls' go to Maine for a long weekend in autumn. One morning I got up early and was wandering about her garden and saw the dew clinging to the branches on all the trees and plants. They were wonderful. Shimmering droplets, brief in their beauty..

Detail of Morning Dew
(Sideways, unfortunately. The technology to change the orientation seems to elude me!!)

I have been working like mad and have several new paintings to share:

These are a few of the things I have been working on lately. Each one of them has a story which I will relate in brief.

The price for each piece is listed in the infor section under the image.

Barcodes
Acrylic on Paper
24" x 18"

I actually think that barcodes are rather beautiful. I took one and moved things around a bit and added color. I think it is rather architectural.

Grasses
Acrylic on Paper
24" x 18"
Private Collection of A. Graves, Esq.

This is actually a study in one color. I selected the bluish background and either added or subtracted the color value and gave a silver sheen to some of the leaves. I think it is rather fun!

Robot
Acrylic on Canvas
12" x 16"

This is just a great guy! He lives in Waterbury - has for years. I think he originally was the mascot for a car wash. At any rate, he is still there - a bit worse for the wear but still smiling!

Set of Skulls: Fish, Bird, Mouse and Monkey
Acrylic on Canvas
Each: 6" x 6"

I have a fascination with skulls. Perhaps from being in medicine for years. I find them to be quite beautiful and intricate. These become rather whimsical with their "party dots" for a decorative border. I also bordered all four sides of each canvas with the same decorative dots. Despite these fun party dots my daughter finds them "creepy"!

The Window
Mixed Media
Private collection of J. Putetti

This came to me one night on vacation in Vermont. I saw the most wonderful deep blue outside and imagined a woman looking out into the velvet night. Somehow, during execution, it became social commentary...

Huricane Waif
Acrylic on Canvas
12" x 16"

Shortly after Huricane Irene ended I looked out the window and saw this "Huricane Waif" wandering about in my neighborhood. As I live in "the hood" I found it to be vastly amusing. I called animal control to see if they could help but they were unable to do so. I have no idea what happened to this poor little guy... he just vanished into my neighbors' back yard.

Brickwork
Acrylic on Canvas
12" x 16"

While in Newport, RI we did the Cliff Walk. I am unsure, now, what mansion this wall belongs to. I just love brick work - of all sorts. The amount of work that goes into laying brick is astounding. Truly an art form. And, despite its age and inexpert repair, this section of wall is still very beautiful.

Winter
Acrylic on Paper
24" x 18"

Gee, I hate winter!  But, paradoxically, I love the colors of winter - the blue white when it is snowing, the almost mystical quiet of a snow storm... This is a view from my back yard during a snow storm.

Palm
Acrylic on Paper

I really wanted to do something tropical, especially since I was freezing while out of power a few months ago. The leaves and shapes of palms are just wonderful. I couldn't resist doing half of the leaves in a metalic gold. The border reminds me of the sand on a tropical beach - soft pearl white and glittering.
